Ovation Awards Shine a Spotlight on Excellence at the 2026 National Arts Festival

By BCRMAG | National Arts Festival 2026 Coverage
The spirit of innovation, courage and artistic excellence took centre stage as the 2026 Ovation Awards celebrated some of the most outstanding productions presented on the Fringe Programme at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
Recognising performances that pushed creative boundaries and captivated audiences, this year’s Ovation Awards highlighted the remarkable depth of talent emerging from South Africa’s independent arts sector. Throughout the Festival, productions were acknowledged with Ovation Award stickers before the prestigious Bronze, Silver and Gold Ovation Awards were presented during the Festival’s closing celebrations.
A distinguished panel of sixteen adjudicators—including academics, reviewers, educators, theatre practitioners and three former Standard Bank Young Artists—undertook the rigorous task of evaluating more than 100 productions over the course of the Festival.
Speaking on the judging process, Ovations Convenor Tamara Schulz reflected on the themes that emerged throughout this year’s Festival.
“Watching a breadth of shows like this is like a temperature check on the state of the nation. Many plays grappled with our traumatic history and difficult themes such as domestic violence and father-son estrangements. Yet, over and again, these difficulties were transformed into magic and healing through music, song and the power of humour and comedy.”
National Arts Festival Associate Producer Zikhona Monaheng also praised the remarkable quality of work presented this year, acknowledging the courage and dedication of artists who continue to create despite challenging circumstances.

Standing Ovation Award
One of the Festival’s most prestigious recognitions, the Standing Ovation Award, was presented to Janet Buckland, director of Mouthpeace, in recognition of both her acclaimed new production A Fool’s Guide to Living and Dying and her lifelong contribution to South African theatre.

Celebrating the Future of South African Theatre
This year’s Ovation Awards reflected more than artistic excellence—they celebrated resilience, bold storytelling and the emergence of a new generation of theatre-makers whose work continues to redefine the South African performing arts landscape.
The awards also reinforced the National Arts Festival’s ongoing commitment to nurturing new voices, encouraging innovation and creating mentorship opportunities that will strengthen the future of the Fringe.
As Tamara Schulz concluded, the Festival’s artists demonstrated remarkable creativity and determination, reminding audiences that live performance remains one of the country’s most powerful tools for healing, reflection and social dialogue.
The 2026 Ovation Awards once again affirmed why the National Arts Festival remains one of Africa’s premier cultural gatherings—where exceptional stories are discovered, celebrated and remembered long after the curtain falls.
